A Seat at the Table

A Seat at the Table is an interactive, socially engaged art installation created by a group of students at George Mason University. It features one-of-a-kind ceramic tea sets and recipe books celebrating pioneering women throughout history; inviting audience participation through shared tea rituals and dialogue.  Participants are encouraged to take a moment to sit down, learn about, honor, and not only discuss impactful women from history, but also women from their personal lives who were great, inspiring, and deserving of having "a seat at the table" in their own right. By adopting the spirit of early 20th-century feminist tea rooms (where, tired of being turned away from public places when they showed up without a male companion, women began to gather, organize, and discuss their rights) we hope to provide a space for recognition of those of us whose accomplishments are unrecognized, overshadowed, or disregarded entirely.
